Since the inception of civil aviation human mobility, including tourism, has grown drastically. While there are positive outcomes from travelling, pitfalls should not be overlooked. This essay will consider pros and cons of tourism for travellers and hosting areas using examples from Thailand.
On the one hand, visiting new countries and learning other cultures helps to become open-minded. In addition, it is generally recommended by psychologists that change of activity and place is probably the best way to recover. Moreover, tourism could economically develop the territory that attracts travellers. For example, Thailand, which is famous for its beautiful nature and world known cuisine, generates up to 70% of its GDP from tourism. Therefore, there are proved advantages for visitors and hosting areas alike.
On the other hand, travelling contains potential dangers for health of those visiting places with conditions that far differ than in originating countries. There is firm evidence that tourists are one of the most vulnerable group of society. A number of statistic reports every year notifies about injured and sick tourists who suffer from weather conditions they do not get used to. Moreover, crowds of visitors, by themselves, represent sever danger for the environment of a hosting place as well. Several Thai islands have been closed for travellers since 2015 due to accumulated waste damaging local flora and fauna. Consequently, tourism could lead to unpleasant outcomes that endanger local nature and travellers’ health.
To conclude, the aforementioned benefits and drawbacks of travelling should be noted and addressed accordingly. Proper management would allow to enjoy positive outcomes while limiting potential dangers.
