Yet relatively recent findings in linguistics show that language competence is best achieved through actually using it. I believe while there are merits to building up vocabulary knowledge, it is more essential to focus the attention on oral and written production.
On the one hand, lexis is the foundation of any verbal message and should be given importance to. The main reason is that in order to convey a concept one needs to express it with words that are accurately and appropriately chosen, otherwise misunderstandings occur. For example, a salesperson without adequate vocabulary reservoir will probably fail to persuade and convince their potential customers to purchase a certain product. Another reason would be the fact that insufficient vocabulary will prevent a learner from making progress in their studies, in that they may face limitations with the types of the resources they can comprehend.
On the other hand, the ultimate goal of a language is to actually communicate through speaking or writing. Firstly, authentic communication is often carried out even with the most limited lexical range, and both sides of the conversation or written correspondence can manage through the inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Secondly, the confidence required to achieve an acceptable level of fluency is only gained in practice. For instance, a learner can spend hours a day revising textbooks, yet find it frustrating to utter a few sentences. Moreover, language is not a solid entity and is susceptible to constant alterations, therefore engaging one’s self in spoken or written interchange with others makes more sense than trying to acquire words that might not mean the same in the future.
In conclusion, it appears to me that despite the benefits that could be gained from learning vocabulary, learning how to naturally speak or write is far more crucial.
