Others argue that it is a necessary and economical form of education in addition to spreading ideas, language and culture

Recently, with the advances of science and technology, the field of marketing has found new means to reach us. It is quite a debate whether it is an intrusion to a country’s culture or whether it can be considered as a form of education in order to spread new ideas. Personally, I believe, with the modern materialised world which always runs after profit, it is more an intrusion than a form of education.
Different countries have different cultures and traditions. Therefore one unified marketing strategy that is developed in a western country cannot be directly applied to an asian country. For an example in Sir Lanka once there was a beer advertisement which uses a lion, which is a prestiges animal in our country even used in our national flag. Therefore there was a huge public protest against that certain advertisement.

Furthermore, in certain countries they have religious constraints against consumption of alcohol. Therefore, if someone in such a country try to use an advertisement that attracts the young generation towards such habits, it will contradict with their traditions.

Secondly, I do not believe modern marketing has an intention of spreading new ideas or culture. They are vastly driven by the intention of selling their product by any means. I have seen several lawsuits against certain advertisement which went to the extent of making false claims in order to sell their products. For an example energy drinks, food supplements usually use sports personals or celebrity figures in order to convey the idea that they have achieved that state using those products, which can be a false claim under certain scenarios.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that international marketing is more harmful to local cultures than spreading new ideas and the governments should take necessary measures in order to monitor and control these attempts.
