Others argue that productive skills such as writing and speaking are more important.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Undoubtedly, an extensive vocabulary entails human expression in all academic and non-academic areas. While some people believe that reading comprehension is the most important factor which can be improved as a result of expanding the lexicon, others argue that writing and speaking are far more critical for social communication. This essay will discuss both views and offer my opinion.
One school of thought believe that understanding texts is crucial in every field, from cooking recipes to building instructions. The more extensive is one’s vocabulary the better understanding of academic texts would have. Numerous studies have found that a well developed lexicon is the base for understanding the entire meaning of a passage. For example, a person with a vast vocabulary would be able to comprehend a scientific explanation of a disease, thus being able to stay informed regarding the topic. Reading comprehension is certainly an area that benefits from an enlarged vocabulary.
In contrast, other people argue that skills like writing and speaking are nowadays particularly important. Writing reports and oral presentations are just two of a large list, where a well developed vocabulary entails success. Research shows that writing requires a vaster knowledge of words, than reading. For instance, a manager would have to write around a million reports and would have quite a fair number of speeches during a career. Obviously, having a large vocabulary, gives the user the opportunity to play with words without repetition.
In conclusion, it is clear that an enlarged lexicon is equally beneficial to readers, writers and speakers. In my view, understanding a reading text is possible without being familiar with all the words, however academic writing and speaking necessitate a well developed vocabulary. Being able to use a variety of words would always be beneficial.
