Is technology making us intellectually weaker or more intelligent?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Nowadays, computers are so widespread that it is hard to live without them, yet it is argued that it makes us less smart. All major companies are computerised which aid them in their expansion projects. However, being too reliant on technology alters our judgements in adverse conditions as we are not trained to work without it. This essay will discuss both viewpoints.
On one hand, technology is the hallmark of globalisation, it provided the logistics for companies to expand worldwide. Computers allows communication and data to be easily transferred from one country to another, therefore undoubtedly requires that employees should adapt to technology. For instance, Forbes revealed that 96% of the top 100 companies totally rely on computers for transfer of information within their different departments. They found that people being offered a job in those enterprises were provided with extra training to adapt to technology.
On the other hand, technology has had a negative impact for workers as they are not able to accomplish their task when the computer systems go down. They are unable to work in adverse conditions and unable to take corrective actions without the help of technology. For example, for the last 20 airplane crash, the National Transport Safety Board identified that 80% of them were due to computer failure and inability for pilots to work without them. Their findings, poses serious questions on the intelligence of humans across the board to work without computers.
In conclusion, technology has helped to build the world of today and allowed companies to expand but it has also caused serious flaws for humans to think without its help. Consequently, there is no doubt that humans should adapt to technology but in doing so, human intelligence has gotten weaker.
