Some people opine that reading skills can be polished by enhancing the vocabulary, while an school of thoughts emphasize on mastering skills of writing and reading. Although knowing a wide range of words help understand the context better, i believe familiarity with communication skills is more significant.
Undoubtedly, avid readers would agree that books are an enriched source of a country’s cultural, traditional and national history. To acknowledge the contributions of national heroes and the struggles of a nation, one should be able to completely understand the words written. For example, if a scholar is interested in reading the success story of China, he must be capable of appreciating the appropriate words chosen by the writer. Without command on terms and expressions, beneficial effects of reading cannot be achieved.
Conversely, living in a foreign country requires communication with the native speakers in their language. With globalization, visiting different countries has become a common practice for business and educational purpose. Speaking, being the widely used medium of salesmen for purchasing and buying products, must be fluent with accurate pronunciation and understandable accent to make a secure place in the job market. Moreover, ability to read and write makes foreigners adjust in the unfamiliar environment soon and brings the opportunity of making useful connections. For example, in the UK, immigrants from Asian countries such as Pakistan and India have established lives after learning English and they can be found progressing in every profession.
Taking the aforementioned facts into account, it is my firm conviction that the practical significance of communication skills weighs more than mere capability of reading. However, a firm grip on language demands a broad recognition of information.
