The maximum number of leisure hours had unemployed and retired males, just over 80, while the full time male employees had half as much of free time.
Similarly as males, unemployed and retired females had the most leisure time, a slightly below 80 hours per week. Conversely, full and part time female workers had much less leisure time, approximately 40 hours weekly. Separate group were housewives with a little bit more free time than employed workers, but still almost 30 hours less leisure time than unemployed and retired ones.
Overall, in terms of employment in all groups males had more leisure hours than females, while the full time employees regardless of sex had the least leisure time. Housewives had considerably less free time than other unemployed groups.
The table shows data from the survey about the travel number and reasons for travelling abroad by UK residents between 1994 and 1998 and the bar graph illustrates destinations they travelled to during this time.
The number of trips increased over the period due to all suggested reasons, holidays, business, visits to friends and relatives and other, from 22,072 to 28,828. Travelling on holidays was by far the main reason and accounted with slight variations for more than two thirds of all made trips. All other reasons put together made roughly one fourth of total with business on second and other on the last place.
Regarding the most popular destinations, Western Europe was undoubtedly the most popular throughout the whole period, around 20m visitors in 1994 and just below 25m in 1998. Conversely, other areas and North America were at rock-bottom never crossing 2,5m visitors.
Travelling abroad followed a upward trend in the UK, mainly because increased holidays overseas, while the Western Europe remained the most popular destination.
