Whether it is better for children to learn through play, or through more structured means such as reading, is contentious. The physical, social and creative development of a child is just as important as their academic development, and so I support a compromise.
It is widely known that reading to your child regularly and from a young age is one of the most beneficial things you can do for them. Creating not only the ability, but the drive to read, breeds much greater academic ability later. A child who reads far above their level, for example, will be able to understand more complex material far in advance of their classmates. In addition, reading fiction helps children to understand that other people’s lives are different, and gain a sense of perspective.
On the other hand, humans are complex animals with many learning needs in their youth. Most of these lessons cannot be read in books nor taught by teachers; they must be learned by interacting with other people in social environments and creating things. Lessons of personal boundaries, for instance, are built up over countless interactions and are far too complicated to hope to teach, and yet they are imperative if you are to succeed in any manner. Children who socialise and play freely will have a much happier adulthood with healthier relationships.
In summary, activities such as reading, painting, playing with others and storytelling are all fundamental parts of a healthy childhood, and none should be sacrificed to give time to another.
Communication is less between family members of late. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is often commented that family members communicate with each other less frequently these days. Although life is much busier and more complex than for the previous generation, and so takes up more time, modern communication devices have permitted far more contact over a longer period; it is for these reasons that I disagree with this notion.
Life before the turn of the millennium was considerably different than it is now. Up to the 1990’s, most people tended to stay relatively close to their birthplace, and so to their families. With increasing urbanisation occurring worldwide, young people are leaving the suburbs in ever-growing numbers for the cities. In addition, the demands of the modern workplace, in a competitive economy, makes it appear as if we are all communicating less. However, before the widespread use of mobile phones and the internet, people who chose to leave family home would not be able to communicate with their family anywhere near as effectively as today.
The prevalence of mobile communication technologies means that families are able to maintain relationships of much more frequent contact. Instant messages have replaced the scheduled phone call and so every thought can be shared the moment it is had. Whereas fifty years ago a family may have gathered around a photo album every few years to reminisce, moments are snapped and sent live. Messenger services such as Whatsapp can even be used to create family groups, updating every member at one.
To conclude, while it is true that we communicate face-to-face much less frequently these days, and that is a problem that needs to be addressed, I believe we have never been more in touch with our families.
