The first approach is based on the assumption that vocabulary acquisition is the key area to promote with regards to improving reading comprehension. However, the other approach sees writing and speaking skills as the most important competences in this area. In the following both views are going to be discussed.
To begin with, in these days the main focus lies on vocabulary training at school. It is the common assumption that the more vocabularies you know, the better your reading comprehension is. In other words, vocabularies are key in order to understand texts. Furthermore, vocabulary acquisition is also beneficial for your speaking and writing skills. For instance, you can use a variety of different vocabularies and thus improve the quality of your language skills.
However, in particular younger teachers are convinced by the second approach in order to improve reading skills. Thus, they argue the better your skills as writing and speaking are, the better your reading competence is. For instance, if you have extensive writing skills you are familiar with the language, you understand the grammar and structure properly and as a result you understand texts more easily. Even though, you do not understand all the vocabularies, you rather understand the content in a comprehensive way.
As far as I am concerned, I believe that it is the combination of both in order to improve your reading skills. Above all, it is important to understand content of a text rather than all the vocabularies written in it. Though in any case, you will not be a proficient writer and speaker if you are not aware of a variety of vocabularies as well.
To conclude, the two approaches explored above have two different focuses. Both are logic and substantive in order to improve reading skills in general. Due to this, every person must decide on its own which approach does fit best to the own learning habits.
