Would society function better without such rules and regulations? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Numerous sociologists believe that copyright laws limit creativity and bloc the free spreading of human intellectual values, resulting in a slowdown of development of technology. In my opinion it is a necessary instrument to protect the rights of authors and ensure further innovations. This essay will look at both viewpoints and demonstrate an argument using examples from WTO and Apple.

On one hand, smaller manufacturers are considering copyright restrictions as the greatest obstacle to enter to the market with new products. They argue, that many of the patents created by multinational organizations are just made to limit competition. A recent report by the World Trade Organization confirms that the number of copyright related lawsuits increased by 15 percent worldwide in the last decade. Thus, this kind of legal protection became more favourable by authors.

On the other hand, many economists and business development researchers thinks that copyright laws are crucial to protect past investments and ensure further development. That is why several IT manufacturers use a special approach to patent every new element of hardware and software solution developed during the product creation process. A publication released by Apple points out that extra income indirectly produced by their patents is always routed to budget the innovation department.

To conclude, I believe that copyright laws are the necessary evil, which can be restrictive in the short term but beneficial for society in the long run. Hopefully these rules and regulations will be more accepted by smaller companies and end-users in the future accelerating developments and innovations in various industries.
