Is technology making us intellectually weaker or more intelligent?

Technological advances have brought great benefits to human lives, yet there can be some negative consequences associated with the intellectual development of people. I strongly believe that computer systems have weakened the mental abilities, and most people nowadays are becoming slave of the electronic devices. This essay will discuss both side of these views and use examples from US and Canada to demonstrate points and support arguments.

On the one hand, there is ample evidence of the increasing technological advantages in the human lifestyles. This is due to the fact that modern technologies have built several electronic devices that simplify people lives. For example, recent Harvard research indicates that 65 % of North Americans that pay their bills by smart phones have saved 3 hours weekly of their time. Therefore, if the technology continues to focus on improving people life conditions, it would be more positive implications.

On the other hand, even though computer systems have made easier individual lives, their excessive usage could contribute to develop mental laziness. This is because many people constantly utilize computers to solve simple problems instead analyzing the issue. For instance, based on recent university studies in Canada the 45% of accountants that use admin software do not remember how to register basic transactions in daily bookkeeping. Therefore, the over reliance of technology instead of traditional methods could be questioned.

To conclude although technological devices reduce time for manual tasks, they could diminish the brain stimulation if people do not use properly. For this reason, I think humans need to see the technology as a practical work tool but never forget traditional approaches.
