Some people say that nowadays family members are communicating much less with each other than they did in the past. I believe this is a justified worry which is caused by different factors of our modern world. We could observe a dramatic change in social relations during the last decade which slightly altered the relation of people, especially family members. In my essay I will introduce some of these forces.
Firstly, new kinds of electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets appeared during the last decade and spread worldwide. Many young and old gadget lovers found a new way to spend a significant amount of time with THESE. Recent research from Harvard University indicates that American teenagers spend daily 3 hours using such devices when they are at home. Therefore, we can clearly state that time spent using digital devices at home takes out potential family time and decrease the amount of in-family communication.
Secondly, another relatively recent phenomenon is the appearance of social networks. A whitepaper published by Facebook last year shows that the average social network member has around 35 active connections. The human mind was not developed by evolution to handle such a high amount of daily interactions, so today’s people are heavily challenged to manage their time spent with others. Consequently, I think by being in touch with more people than we can handle, communication time is taken away from our families.
To conclude, I believe the amount of day to day communication is decreasing amongst family members which is a real problem of our decade.

Doing an enjoyable activity with a child can develop better skills and imaginations than reading. To what extent do you agree? Use reasons and specific examples to explain your answer.

Some people believe that reading is the ultimate way to develop imagination and certain skills, so they try to force their children to read daily. In my opinion, reading is a great habit with many values but there are other ways which can develop our kids more efficiently. In my essay I will show other beneficial activities parents can motivate their kids to do.
Firstly, there are board games which are not only fun to play for children but they help to learn and practice social interactions, also they are improving imagination and logical thinking. That is why many psychologists recommend to introduce family board game nights where adults can spend quality time with kids. Famous and classic games such as Monopoly or Dungeons and Dragons can not only bring the family together but they can act as skill development catalysts for the little ones.
Secondly, we can consider sports as a great tool for skill development. When playing team sports children can develop their cognitive and physical abilities and learn human and group behavior. A 2012 study from the World Health Organization proves that children playing at least 5 hours of team sports per week can over-perform their non-participating classmates with generic results.
To conclude from the examples and arguments given, I firmly believe that many activities can develop children’s imagination and certain skills better than reading. It is the responsibility of schools and other cultural organizations to popularize these activities amongst children beside the promotion of reading.
