In recent years pollution has been progressively increasing across the major metropolises of the world. The issue has been aggravated by the augmented number of circulating vehicles, and by a decreased number of governments investing funds on improving public transportation. This essay will examine the reasons that have contributed to the current environmental damage and will identity possible solutions.

Undubtedly, the number of automobiles sold every year keeps on expanding. People often prefer the comfort of driving their own car ignoring the devastating impact that carbon dioxide produces on the planet. Owning a car entitles a certain type of flexibility that is certainly not given by using public transportation. Additionally, a smaller number of countries make public transit a priority. For instance in 2015 Brazil, while hosting the Olympic Games, decided to allocate more than 80 % of the national budget in building stadiums,while only a tiny part was dedicated to expand and improve the domestic railway network . Therefore, due to lack of an efficient public transit network and an extreme car ownership, environmental degradation is an expanding phenomenon.

While looking at the solutions, promoting car-sharing over the internet and the media could be a crucial element in reducing exhaust fumes in urban areas. Workers could share the same vehicle driving together at work. Moreover, expanding the amount and the quality of bike lanes could have a doble benefit: declining the toxic emission quantities and having a healtier population. For instance, the Swedish government over the last 5 years has quadruplicated the number of bike lanes available in the country. This measure has reduced the greenhouse gases by around 20% in the same time period.

To conclude, since pollution is a progressively negative phenomenon mainly caused by an excessive number of vehicles ad by a poor quality of the public transit system, measures such as car sharing should be implemented . Furthermore, local authorities should prioritize the national budget toward better urban transportation service and the development of a solid bike lane system .

Task 1

The graph provides information on new and second hand car sold in seven different geographical areas during the year 2013.

Holmfirth, the major number of vehicles was sold: 650 second hands units against 544 new vehicles. A similar pattern is found in Meltham, Upperthong and Slaithwaite that represent the areas where both new and used vehicles were mostly sold.

Conversely in Slaithwaite, Netherthong and Netherton the less significant amount of vehicles was purchased with only 120 second hand car sold in Netherthong and 95 new ones. A unique feature is found in Longly Farm where the selling quantity of used cars in comparison to the new one is marginal ( 215 versus 212 units)

Overall in 2013 the selling of used cars in the seven locations presented has been more successful than the new ones. Holmfirth has achieved the biggest amount of new and used cars purchased ,while Netherton has reached less than one sixth of Holmfirth’s results.
