Whilst some companies have been considered as intrusive by expanding their horizons, many others have been well received. Companies that effectively empathize with the culture, values and norms of the new territory they are reaching are seeing as a necessary and economical form of education.
Companies that disregard the societal norms of the countries that they are entering are considered intrusive. A few years ago, a bikini company began advertising in Saudi Arabia. Days after the billboards were set up, the local authorities took them away, fined and requested the company to leave the country inmediately. Clearyl, the bikini company wasn’t tailoring their offering and marketing material to suit the norms of the local public and came across as invasive.
Organisations that study the local culture and tailor their products and marketing material are welcome by their new potential customers. As an example, when Mcdonalds opened their stores in India, they made sure that no meat was served in their combos. Additionally, they decided to create a local combo called “McCurry”. Companies that operate empathically in their new markets drive economic growth, support the spread of ideas and culture.
It can be said that in order for companies to be effective at driving economic growth, the spread of ideas and culture, they need to study carefully the local cultures, values and norms of the countries that they are entering.
